Elastics (Rubber Bands)

Wearing rubber bands is essential for aligning your bite during orthodontic treatment. While braces and wires straighten your teeth, aligning the bite takes longer and determines when your braces can be removed. Commitment to wearing your elastics as instructed is crucial for optimal results.

Wear your elastics constantly, 24 hours a day, unless instructed otherwise. Keep them in while eating, playing, and sleeping, and remove them only for brushing, flossing, replacing them with fresh elastics, and occasional meals. Eating with your elastics on can enhance tooth movement. Change your elastics at least 3-4 times a day or every 12 hours to maintain their strength and elasticity. If you need assistance with placement, we provide a handout with a diagram to guide you.

Proper elastic wear is vital for successful treatment. Failure to wear them as instructed will lengthen your treatment time and impede progress. Some discomfort is normal initially, but wearing your elastics consistently will allow your teeth to adjust. Never double up on elastics, even if you miss a day. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us. Your cooperation with elastic wear is crucial for achieving the best possible orthodontic outcome.
